Tech Alert: Use of AIoT to maintain indoor air quality

Across facilities, the parameters for a good air quality are very different. Using real-time occupants or the building manager can decide and control behaviours and interventions to improve air quality. The continuous technological advancements notably, as regards, networking, sensors, and embedded devices have have made it possible to monitor and provide assistance to people in their homes. Smart objects with capabilities for sensing and connecting could revolutionize the way we are monitoring the environment.

In this edition of Tech Alert, we talk to Tolga Candan, Director - Strategic Business Development, Sensgreen. The technology company is known for its Indoor Air Quality solutions with an AI-engined software platform and homegrown patented wireless sensors converting measured data into actionable insights for optimizing HVAC control systems.

The technology addresses many challenges in today’s environment. Candan says that the AIoT solutions dynamically measure all the key parameters and processes the big data for each individual space towards actionable insights to maintain an indoor ambient air as per the WHO & ASHRAE standards without compromising energy efficiency performance. “Furthermore, the QR system establishes a data driven communication channel between the occupants and the technical teams managing the facilities, adding the very important human feedback in addition to all other technical parameters we're measuring,” he adds.

During the pandemic the solution has helped many service providers in the region to create a safe environment in the facility. Despite the relatively short period that we've been experiencing the covid-19 pandemic, there are numerous studies outlining the risk levels of transmission with the indoor air parameters. “This can be seen especially in the particle levels, distribution of fresh air ventilation and the humidity levels. The slightest increase in the PM (particulate matter) levels is observed to double the impact of the pandemic,” adds Candan.

Two of Sensgreen’s clients are a large shopping mall covering 80,000 sqm lease area, and a global leader in banking. They have both adopted Sensgreen solutions, quickly and easily, to real-time monitor all the key air parameters, run their HVAC more efficiently and also minimize the transmission risks for the welfare of their visitors and employees. “Actually, the mall even started displaying their air quality score as per Ashrae and WHO standards to boost the public confidence and attract more visitors, which turned out to be a very successful way to positively differentiate from others,” cites Candan.

Why does one need this kind of data? Candan simply says that one cannot improve what you cannot measure!  “People deserve the 2020’s technologies to be adapted in their buildings as well, regardless how old they are. And it’s not far where people will start choosing which schools to enlist their children or which shopping malls to visit as per their indoor air quality indexes, and we simply cannot turn our backs to people’s demand for a healthy air,” he sums up.
